Barbara (Barb) Van Horn and John Van Horn of Marengo, IL

Barbara "Barb" Van Horn (84) passed away January 23, 2023 and John Van Horn (84) passed away on January 25, 2023. Both were cared for at JourneyCare Family Hospice in Barrington, IL and were able to be in the same room to spend their last moments together surrounded by their loving family.

The couple is preceded in death by Barb's parents Joseph and Dorothy Tentler, John's parents John and Jane Van Horn, Barb's brother Lynn "Butch" Tentler, and their daughter Pamela Rae Van Horn. They are survived by their sons Mike Van Horn of Phoenix, AZ and Chris (Kathy) Van Horn of Harvard, IL, their grandchildren Bethany (Kurt) Kraeplin, Jason (Corey) Foster, Sarah (Peter) Shanks, and their great-grandchildren Becca, Jacob, Jaylin, Jaxton, Riley, Regan and Eli, and great-great grandchildren Bradley and Braxton, and sister-in-law Judi Tentler.

Barb was born to the late Joseph and Dorothy Tentler on May 15, 1938 in Mendota, IL. John was born of the late John and Jane Van Horn on December 21, 1938 in Mendota, IL. The couple were high school sweethearts and both graduated from Mendota High school in 1956. They maintained many close relationships with high school friends, including Barb's weekly gatherings with the "Lunch Bunch" crew for many years. Barb and John married June 26, 1958 and exemplified their wedding vows by standing by each other and caring for each other through all of life's trials and celebrations. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this summer.

In addition to being a loving and attentive mother and wife, Barb worked in the cafeteria at Coventry Elementary School, in Crystal Lake for many years. Everybody always looked forward to her "peanut butter blobs". John was a math teacher and vocational education teacher at Central High School District 155 in Crystal Lake, IL for most of his 30 years in education. John was a "social butterfly" making friends everywhere he went. His wit and sense of humor made him lovable and everyone's favorite jokester. Sharing the same work schedule they were able to travel every summer with their children covering many states and national parks in the U.S. Some of their favorite destinations were Estes Park, CO and Fort Myers, FL. For many years Barb and John spent every weekend at their Woodhaven Lakes vacation home, where they enjoyed bird watching and socializing with friends. Barb took great pride in her flower gardens that caught everyone's attention. Barb and John became "snow birds" later in life and escaped the midwest winters to their vacation home in Fort Myers, FL coming back to be near family in the warmer months.

A couple who was inseparable on earth have now joined each other in heaven. Their life will be celebrated privately with immediate family. The family would like to send the most heartfelt thank you to JourneyCare Hospice and encourage any memorial donations to be made to this organization.
