CHIKAKO DAISHIN KUMAMOTO June 3, l940 to April 17, 2024

Chikako was born in Manchuria, but after WWII, her family returned to Hiroshima, Japan. While attending school there, she developed a fascination with the English language that lasted all her life. After getting her liberal arts degree, she received an MA in English at the University of Hiroshima. Then, getting a Fulbright Scholarship, she went on to get an MA in English literature at Marquette University. Able to stay in the States, she went on to get a PhD in literature at Loyola. She started teaching English grammar and literature at the College of DuPage. During her time there, she wrote many articles for scholarly journals, but she felt her greatest achievement was to inaugurate an annual journal which published outstanding C.O.D. student papers of every academic discipline for the year. She expanded her academic horizons by enrolling and completing the University of Chicago MLA course.

She pursued her lifetime interest in Shakespeare by attending plays in Chicago and annually going to the Wooden O Festival and Symposium in Utah. She actively participated in symposium affairs for many years, by helping select articles for the annual Wooden journal. In the United States, she is survived by her husband, Steven Kumamoto, and her brother-in-law, David Kumamoto. In Japan, she is survived by her sister, Shoko Maeda, and her brother, Katsuhiko Daishin.
