Elisabeth
Manly
d. Oct 7, 2026
Elisabeth Manly, 92, of Glenview, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home on October 7, 2026.
Born in Czechoslovakia, Elisabeth was the daughter of the late Johann Höpp and Angela Weber, and the loving sister of the late Hans Höpp, the late Lena Geissler, Erika Wagner and Herta Fey. She grew up during World War II and later lived in postwar Germany and was educated at Humboldt University in Berlin. These early experiences helped shape her resilience, strong work ethic and deep appreciation for the beauty in the world around her.
In 1957, Elisabeth emigrated to the United States to begin a new chapter. She worked as a translator at Northwestern University and later as an editor for Modern Age, an academic quarterly journal. In 1969, she married Chesly L. Manly, a prominent Chicago Tribune journalist, editorial board member and author. He died the following year, shortly before their son was born. Raising her son on her own, Elisabeth began buying and managing apartment buildings--a career well suited to her business sense and work ethic. She built a wonderful life for herself and her son, raising him with strength and devotion.
Elisabeth had a remarkable passion for discovering the world and visited more than 60 countries. An avid reader, she enjoyed mystery novels and also had a love of classical music and enjoyed performances at Chicago Symphony Center, the Chicago Lyric Opera, and Ravinia.
Elisabeth is survived by her beloved son, Chesly John Manly; her daughter-in-law, Christine Manly; her three grandchildren, Connor, Collin, and Charlotte Elisabeth; and her sisters, Erika Wagner and Herta Fey.
She will be remembered with love by her family and by all those whose lives she touched.
